How’s that for a catchy title? Okay. I’ve been wanting to make these for a long time, but I’m too cheap to pay full price for…well…anything. I waited ever-so-impatiently for stamps to go 1/2 off, and when they did, I snatched up a bunch!
I went to my local Lowe’s to pick up some tiles, and I found some for .14 cents!!! Of course, I didn’t pick up enough, but I’ll get some more later. This batch was to play around and figure out how bad I am at stamping.
Do you want a tutorial? Well, you’re getting one anyway. I started out with .14 cent tiles. You don’t have to have those, but it makes it much more fun if you do. I used a bunch of different rubber stamps and a stamp ink called “Staz on”. It’s supposed to be for non-pourous surfaces–such as .14 cent tile.
Here is my madness in the making. Because I’m a bad tutorializer (yup, made up), I didn’t take pictures of the stamp pad or the backs of the tiles.
Basically, I just used some felt dots that I had laying around the house. I guess you could cut some cork or felt for the whole back, but that seemed like a lot of work to me. I cut some cream paper into squares, stamped on them, then rubbed some of the ink from the stamp around the edges to “age” it.
I chose some coordinating ribbon, waved my magic wand, and called it good. This picture’s a little blurry, but I thought you might like to see the detail of the script. So pretty.

They are lovely! Anyone would feel pretty special to be on the receiving end of these! QUESTION: Is that script actually a stamp? Is it a smaller stamp that you repeated several times on one tile? I love it! I am intrigued.
Wendy says
Love it!! I think I may try it.
Amy says
Did you spray them with any kind of sealer? I made some at Christmas for my kids with their last names and large initial on them and didn’t spray them and they ran. I had to re-do them. 🙁 But then they were fine! I love the script ones!!

Chris~Those turned out fantastic!
So, that ink is permanent? Did you have to seal the tiles after they were stamped?
You did a very good tutorial!

You are so funny! How I wish I was funny. But I’m not. But this comment is not about me, it’s about you! Great job…even if you’re not a great “tutorializer.” And there is nothing wrong with buying the love of fellow employees. 😉

Darn you!! Every time I read one of your posts, I add something else to my list of things that I absolutely must have or the world might end. I just blogged the other night about a new project I want to start working on, but I think I might do this first! Winter’s almost over, my mitten and scarf box can wait!!
Anna@Boogers,Bibs,BooksAndBubbles says
I also did these…back in September. Got the idea from Susie Harris of Bienvenue.
One tip for ya…I found that spraying them with an inexpensive sealer is a great idea. I used a set for a while and it started to smudge. Staz-on doesn’t always “stay on” :o) Also, they look really cute if you can find the pads that are black and thicker. I used those on the sets that I gave to family for Christmas and they just raved over how cute they were. I ended up getting some stamps with Bible verses on them; those were a big hit as well. Great for Bible studies!

I love the one with words! What a fantastic stamp choice. I have seen these before and have been ho-hum about it. But yours are fantastic! I think it is all about the choice of stamp. And you picked the perfect ones! 🙂

Cute project. I have tons of tiles that I got free. They are white and glossy, so I don’t think they’d turn out the same.

I hadn’t thought about giving them as gifts like this. I had the girls make their own (travertine left over from backsplash, paint pens, felt feetie pads) so they’d use them on their desks…but this would be a perfect grandparents gift 🙂

I made these a couple of years ago – if you bake the tiles in the oven after you stamp them with StazOn ink then they won’t run and you own’t have to seal them. I love the napkin idea though – definitely going to try those for something new. Also – the hand sanitizers were a hit!
Kenlie says
I love this idea! I already have the staz-on and a zillion stamps so I am going to make some of my own…This is such a great way to personalize coasters, and I have a thing for coasters anyway so yay!
Thanks for the tip!

Wow, nice coasters! They're very fragile though, right? Because I remember my mom receiving something like this as a souvenir for a wedding she attended. But instead of tiles, it was made up of glass, almost like a jalousie for windows. It's very heavy, and fragile, so I'm scared of using it!

I love your ideas. The one who commented that you should bake the tiles after stamping them….How long do you bake them for?
Do you sell your creations anywhere? You should really consider starting your own home business if you don't have one already.
Keep up the lovely work.
Nicoleigh says
I made some coasters a while ago, and they turned out just fine. But someone mentioned they 'cook' them in the oven for a little bit. Did you do that with these? I haven't had a problem with fading…but just wondered what is best. Thanks! (I am going to make a few sets for an upcoming benefit auction…so want them to be great!)
