Inexpensive Teacher Gifts

by Chris on December 18, 2010

And when I say inexpensive, I mean chee to the eep. I went to Lowes and shopped their tile department. They had simple white tiles for $.16 a piece. Yup. Six…teen…cents.

snowflake tiles

The ol’ handy dandy Silhouette machine came to the rescue once again. I found some cute snowflakes that were a pain the bahoony to line up right so easy to place on the tiles! The Silhouette made it SO easy to get these cut out, but the intricacy of the snowflakes weren’t all that easy to place. It took me two episodes of Modern Family—not too bad.

I hot glued some cork sheet to the bottom of each one and wrapped them with some ribbon.  Wal Mart has a beautiful section of wide satin ribbon. I make sure to stock up on it every time I go in. The width of it also helped to keep the tiles from sliding around.

I bought $5.00 gift cards from Starbucks for each teacher. I wasn’t impressed with the envelope they came in, so I turned to my Silhouette once again. Of COURSE they had a gift card envelope to cut! Why wouldn’t they?

Some coordinating paper I had on hand worked out perfectly. I considered punching a hold in it to thread it on with some ribbon, but it stayed put quite nicely. I left it as is.

You ready for a total on this one? Let’s see. $5.00 + $.16 x 4= (pause to ask my husband) $5.64!! Yahoooony!

Do you use "transfer" paper for your vinyl?? If not…you don't have to get the expensive stuff for vinyl, just go to Walmart and get a roll of CLEAR CONTACT PAPER in the kitchen isle for $4 and it will last you forever. Just stick that on top of your vinyl decal, peel it off, the "snowflake" will now be stuck to the clear paper & then press on to your tile & then pull your contact paper off. Makes for the easiest transfers!

What wonderful gifts…my mom was a teacher and although she appreciated all the gifts her students gave her, the ones that were useful were her favorites…Thanks for sharing your great idea…

I love the idea of the tiles for coasters. I am going to have toremember that for next year. Seeing how I am done with the shopping this year. You have the best "out of the box" ideas. Thanks.

Wow! I think that is best craft I've seen all year on your blog. LOVE, love, love that gorgeous photo with the red ribbon. So glamorous!

I must admit I am more than intimidated with the Silhouette. I do see some of the projects and love them; just not sure of everything it can do and if I can do them? I am not a crafter but honestly, those coasters were AMAZING. Where on earth do you come up with those ideas?

Hmmm…After seeing the coasters, I'd love to see a larger red snowflake framed in a white frame for Christmas.

so glad to see the tip about contact paper in the comments. have you tried it yet?

i just got a silhouette and have found that the more intricate the design, the harder it is to transfer. I literally have to peel it off the transfer paper. takes hours!

I can see how the snowflakes could be a little hard to set on there perfectly. You did a great job.

Do these need to be sealed?

Reply

Chris June 21, 2011 at 8:41 pm

I never did seal them, Steph. I know some people do, but they’ve stayed for me.

Reply

Erin November 30, 2011 at 10:12 pm

If they are not sealed they will not last as long. Vinyl will bubble with heat. So putting a cup of hot chocolate or coffee on it could be the end of the tile. They are adorable, but they should be sealed.

Kathleen April 27, 2012 at 2:53 pm

What would you use to seal them? And I wonder how it would do if I modge podged a picture instead?

Reply

Chris April 27, 2012 at 7:35 pm

I imagine it would work really well, Kathleen! Doesn’t hurt to try, eh?

Carole July 25, 2011 at 3:46 pm

That is such an awesome idea! I have a box of plain white tiles that the previous owners of our house left in the basement! I am so going to get some vinyl and use my Cricut to do this for Christmas!!

I made sets of these for my sisters to take home on Thanksgiving. I used some scrapbooking papers that had vintage Christmas designs of the 40′s and 50′s. They loved them and they weren’t hard to make at all. I’m planning on making some for the girls in my office for Christmas gifts.

I do not understand how the snowflake is stuck to the tile? if its contact paper, won’t it come unglued or loose if hot cups are set on it or liquids spilled on it? is there a protective coating over the snowflake?

Reply

Chris December 1, 2011 at 9:03 pm

It’s actually a vinyl, Rhonda. It stays on very well–better than contact paper would. Hope that helps.
